Returning to the Cam once again, SCBC’s W1 and M1 crews decide to compete in the Fairbairn Cup in Cambridge this year in full crews of eight, unlike last year's fours. Grateful that there was considerably less wind than there was during Thursday’s races, our crews hit the river on Friday and managed to navigate the twists and turns of the 4.3-kilometre course. Our M1 clocked a time of 16:17 with our women coming in at 18:28.
Both our crews enjoyed themselves immensely, and we hope to see SCBC's blades pushing our crews down the Cam again next year!
This year saw the chance for SCBC to take part in an initiative from The Movember Foundation called ‘Rowvember’. In order to raise awareness and money for men’s health, several Oxford college boat clubs took part in the Rowvember challenge, which involved simply 60 seconds of intense rowing on the erg.
Everyone who took part logged the distance they managed to cover in that time and donated to The Movember Foundation.
29 SCBC rowers took to the erg to participate in the initiative, collectively logging a total distance of 8561 metres!
The beginning of the new academic year means the beginning a new generation of rowers for SCBC. Over the course of Michaelmas Term, our novice crews trained hard to achieve great results in their first competition: Christ Church Regatta. Here are the results:
Day 1: Our men’s novices achieved an easy win over St. Peter’s, while our women lost out against St. John’s; however, as it was a friendly race, they were still able to row the next day!
Day 2: The women’s novices came back from their previous defeat with roaring success, easily beating St. Antony’s. The men were sadly eliminated after losing out to a very strong crew from New College.
Day 3: Another victory for the women’s novices with an easy win over St. Hilda’s, placing them in the final 16
Day 4: Facing a strong crew from Keble, the women bowed out of the competition having made it to the final day of racing!
A huge well done to all of our novices, who shall return in Hilary term as seniors! We look forward to seeing what their first Torpids and Summer Eights will bring!
